Foundations of Teaching for Learning: Being a Professional
Course Modules

The course modules cover topics such as professional behavior, ethical conduct, legal responsibilities, personal philosophy of teaching, and professional learning community, providing comprehensive training and development for educators.

What it means to be a professional

Module 1 explores the characteristics of a profession and a professional, societal expectations of teachers, and the importance of teachers in student outcomes. Participants will develop their own philosophy of teaching and gain essential knowledge on syllabus, grading, and logistics.

Ethics, codes of conduct and standards for teachers

Module 2 focuses on ethical, professional behavior, features and uses of professional standards, registration and certification, and codes of conduct for teachers. Participants will engage in interviews and peer assessments to enhance their understanding and practice.

Legal and administrative responsibilities of a teacher

Module 3 delves into the legal and administrative responsibilities of teachers, covering the duty of care, negligence, and the rights and responsibilities of students, parents, and teachers. Participants will be equipped with essential knowledge to navigate legal and administrative aspects of teaching.

Developing a personal philosophy of teaching

Module 4 guides participants in developing a personal philosophy of teaching by exploring the impact of teaching and education, evidence on effective teaching, and reflections on values, beliefs, and current philosophy. Interviews and peer assessments provide opportunities for deepening understanding and practice.

Being part of a professional learning community

Module 5 emphasizes the power of professional learning communities, action learning using evidence, and the role of leadership in professional learning. Participants will understand the significance of being part of a professional learning community and the impact on their professional development.

Continuing to develop as a professional

Module 6 focuses on reflection, self-assessment, goal setting, gaining and utilizing feedback, formulating a personal professional development plan, and managing teacher stress and satisfaction. Interviews and quizzes offer opportunities for practical application and continuous improvement.
