This comprehensive course comprises modules covering globalization, trade and investment theories, tools of trade policy, productivity development, analytical tools, and giving evidence-based policy advice.

Theories of globalization, trade and investment

The first module focuses on globalization, trade and investment theories. It covers topics such as how globalization shaped economic theory, modern trade theories, understanding foreign direct investment, and measuring openness. Students will gain insights into the impact of trade and investment on developing countries and emerging markets.

Trade and investment policies

The second module delves into trade and investment policies, including tools of trade policy, FDI policy instruments, economic diplomacy, and observing FDI spillover transmission channels. Participants will explore the weight of economic and commercial diplomacy and its implications on trade and investment.

Micro: Trade and productivity

In the third module, the focus shifts to micro aspects of trade and productivity. Students will delve into topics such as productivity development and firm heterogeneity, measuring heterogeneity and productivity, and the effectiveness of export promotion programs in enhancing productivity and development in Eastern Africa.

Macro: Analytical tools and modelling

The fourth module explores macro analytical tools and modeling, including the gravity model, estimation of trade policy analysis, and potentials and pitfalls of the enlargement of the East African Community. Participants will gain practical insights into trade policy analysis and its implications on regional economic integration.

Giving evidence based policy advice

The final module emphasizes giving evidence-based policy advice, covering trade, FDI, and controversies in developing countries, how to give policy advice, and effectively communicating research findings in a policy setting. Students will engage in a peer review assignment to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.
