Course

Modelling and measuring the Energy Transition

Politecnico di Milano

This MOOC by Politecnico di Milano delves into the challenges of modelling the energy transition at global and regional levels. Attendees gain insights into national energy accounting, energy system modelling using open-source software, and industrial ecology tools for impact assessment. The course encompasses topics such as linear programming, scenario analysis principles, monetary input-output tables, and the use of the Python-based open-source tool MARIO for regional impact assessment studies. Participants will engage in hands-on practice using Excel and gain a foundational understanding of assessing the sustainability of the energy transition through an industrial ecology approach.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding the global energy challenge and historical trends
  • Hands-on practice in Excel-based energy modelling for single and multi-regional scenarios
  • Introduction to industrial ecology, life cycle perspective, and monetary input-output analysis
  • Application of open-source tools for regional impact assessment studies
