Life, Health and Radiation
Course Modules

This course comprises five modules that delve into the properties, uses, and risks associated with various forms of radiation. Participants will journey through the electromagnetic spectrum, gaining comprehensive insights into this essential topic.

Atomic interactions

This course begins with an exploration of atomic interactions, providing a foundation for understanding radiation. Participants will delve into the properties of electromagnetic waves and gain insights into the interaction of radiation with matter. The module also includes pre-course self-reflection exercises, quizzes, and further readings to enhance learning.

Longwave radiation

Module 2 focuses on longwave radiation, exploring the discovery of radiation and delving into various forms of longwave radiation such as ELF, radio frequency, and microwave radiation. Participants will debunk fears related to longwave radiation and gain comprehensive insights into its properties and effects.

Light as radiation

Light as radiation is the focus of Module 3, delving into visible and ultraviolet radiation. The module also explores biological effects of ionizing radiation, repair pathways, and the biological impact of radiation on natural selection. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the power of sight and the biological impact of different types of radiation.

Ionising radiation

Module 4 provides an in-depth exploration of ionizing radiation, focusing on X-rays, gamma rays, and radiation protection. Participants will gain insights into personalized risk, justification practices, and cultural perspectives on cancer related to ionizing radiation. The module also includes quizzes and further readings to enhance learning.

Radiation in health

Radiation in health is the central theme of Module 5, exploring the application of radiation in X-ray and CT examinations, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, MRI, and ultrasound. Participants will gain insights into the appropriate radiation doses for different medical procedures and discover the representation and discoveries in science related to radiation in health.
