Paleontology: Ancient Marine Reptiles

University of Alberta

Paleontology: Ancient Marine Reptiles is a four-lesson course offered by the University of Alberta. This comprehensive course delves into the evolutionary transitions of air-breathing terrestrial animals to the aquatic environment, focusing on extinct marine reptiles. Through engaging lessons, students will explore the diversity, adaptations, convergence, and phylogenetic relationships of ancient marine reptiles, including ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and mosasaurs. The course is designed to provide a deep understanding of the paleobiology and stratigraphic records of these fascinating creatures.

The course is led by expert presenters and includes interactive learning objects, course notes, and graded assessments for each module. Students will gain a solid grasp of the adaptations of aquatic tetrapods, as well as the diversity and paleobiology of ichthyopterygians, sauropterygians, and mosasauroids. By the end of the course, learners will have a comprehensive understanding of the evolutionary journey of ancient marine reptiles.
