Course

Defining, Describing, and Visualizing Data

University of Colorado Boulder

Defining, Describing, and Visualizing Data is a crucial course for leaders aiming to leverage data-based methods in decision-making and problem-solving. Through this course, participants will gain the skills to classify data, calculate descriptive statistics, create graphical representations using R software, and make informed decisions using probability distributions.

The course is structured into five modules, covering essential topics such as data and measurement, working with data in RStudio and ROIStat, describing data graphically and numerically, determining probabilities, and making decisions with discrete and continuous probability distributions.

Participants will delve into the fundamentals of data and measurement, learning about measurement scales, sampling concepts, and descriptive statistics. They will also gain hands-on experience working with data in RStudio and ROIStat, enabling them to import data, understand data types and structures, and utilize useful functions for data analysis.

Furthermore, the course delves into the visualization of data, covering techniques such as creating run charts, histograms, box and whisker plots, scatterplots, and interpreting various measures of central tendency and dispersion. Additionally, participants will explore probability theory, including basic probability, mutually exclusive events, conditional probability, and probability distributions.

Upon completion, learners will possess the skills to effectively classify data, calculate descriptive statistics, create graphical representations, and make informed decisions using probability distributions, empowering them to excel in leadership and management roles within the engineering and technical sectors.
