This course comprises five modules that extensively cover the significance of social and emotional learning (SEL) for teachers and students. Participants will explore the core competencies of SEL, its implementation in K-12 settings, and specific programs designed to promote teachers' emotional well-being.
The Teacher's Social and Emotional Learning module delves into the role of emotions such as sadness, joy, and passion in teaching. Participants will reflect on the definitions and significance of grit, grace, and personal wholeness in the teaching profession, fostering a deeper understanding of emotional well-being for educators.
The SEL for Students module focuses on social emotional well-being and its relevance to the classroom environment. Participants will identify the purposes and goals of SEL while evaluating the benefits and constraints of secondary SEL programs, gaining insights into fostering emotional growth among students.
Expanding SEL explores practices that promote critical awareness of self and others, including critical witnessing and Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR). Additionally, participants will examine the mediation of cultural experiences and identity in students' social emotional well-being through SEL, broadening their perspectives on emotional growth.
The Teacher SEL module delves into specific programs and possibilities designed for educators, such as mindfulness and Center for Courage and Renewal programs. Participants will explore narrative approaches to complex responses in teaching, emphasizing the significance of emotional resilience and well-being among teachers.
The SEL Capstone enables participants to effectively implement SEL programs within their school communities, emphasizing the principles and advantages of social and emotional learning for both students and teachers. Upon completion, participants will be equipped to advocate for the holistic benefits of SEL.
