Social Impact Strategy: Tools for Entrepreneurs and Innovators

This course, offered by the University of Pennsylvania, provides an introduction to social impact strategy and social entrepreneurship. The course also prepares students to apply for the Global Social Impact House, a seven-day residential program offering advanced workshops, community building, and leadership training.

Upon completion, students will be eligible to apply for the Global Social Impact House, where they can gain further insights, tools, and a global network to advance their ventures. Course Modules

This course consists of four modules that guide students through the Define, Design, Pilot, and Scale stages. Each module provides in-depth knowledge and practical tools for launching and scaling social impact organizations.

Introduction

This module introduces students to social innovation, traditional approaches to problem solving, and the traits of social enterprise. It also covers the importance of business models and presents real-world examples of social innovators and entrepreneurs. Through weekly quizzes and recommended readings, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the foundational concepts in social impact strategy and entrepreneurship.

Define and Design

In this module, students delve into the Define and Design stage, learning about the design process, empathy-driven insights, prototyping, and the use of logic models to articulate their roadmap to impact. The module provides practical guidance through examples and activities, equipping students with the essential tools to identify and develop innovative solutions for social challenges.

Pilot and Scale

Module three focuses on the Pilot and Scale stage, exploring different approaches to measuring performance, such as Social Return on Investment (SROI) and the Balanced Scorecard. It also delves into the concept of scale and various approaches to scaling social impact organizations. Through real-life examples and quizzes, students gain insights into effectively measuring performance and scaling their ventures.

Sector Selection and Business Models

This module delves into sector selection and business models, emphasizing the importance of a strong business model for social impact organizations. Students learn about different business models, competitive positioning, and the critical criteria for assessing business models. Real-world examples and activities provide practical insights for students to choose the most suitable business model for their ventures.
