This four-week course, "Introduction to Augmented Reality and ARCore," offered by Google AR & VR, provides a comprehensive introduction to augmented reality (AR) and ARCore. Designed for beginners, the course covers the fundamentals of AR experiences, tools and platforms used in the AR landscape, and popular use cases for AR. Participants will learn how to create an AR user flow and gain an understanding of the technical aspects of AR experiences. The course breaks down complex AR concepts to make them easy to understand, while also sharing expert tips and knowledge from Daydream's ARCore team.

Throughout the course, participants will explore topics such as the history of augmented reality, the basics of AR functionality, and the next steps in building AR experiences using ARCore. The modules cover a range of essential concepts, including the similarities and differences between AR and VR, placing and positioning assets, motion tracking, and environmental understanding in AR. Additionally, participants will gain insights into the technical constraints and limitations of AR, as well as the tools and platforms, such as Google Poly and Unity, used to build AR experiences.

Introduction to augmented reality (AR)

This module introduces participants to the history of augmented reality and its current applications, exploring the similarities and differences between AR and VR. It also provides an overview of popular use cases for AR, such as in gaming, shopping, and business. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of augmented reality and its potential applications.

The basics of AR functionality

In this module, participants will delve into the basics of AR functionality, covering essential topics such as placing and positioning assets, occlusion, lighting for increased realism, and tracking in AR. The module also addresses technical constraints and limitations of AR, providing insights into the hardware that makes mobile AR work and the fundamentals of ARCore.

Taking the next steps with ARCore

Participants will explore the next steps with ARCore, learning about the challenges and considerations when working with technical limitations in AR. The module covers topics such as user flow, preparing tools, drafting design, and building a team for executing AR visions. Participants will also gain insights into cloud anchors for shared AR and various interaction options in AR.

Bringing ARCore to life

This module focuses on bringing ARCore to life, covering aspects such as surface detection, user interaction, placing with anchor points, and light estimation. Participants will also explore tools like Google Poly and Unity for creating ARCore assets, gaining practical skills in utilizing these resources to develop AR experiences. The module offers a comprehensive understanding of the mechanics and creative aspects of ARCore.
