This Specialization from The Museum of Modern Art offers an in-depth exploration of modern and contemporary art and design, providing a unique behind-the-scenes look at artworks and insights from artists, designers, and curators. With no prior knowledge required, learners will gain a deeper understanding of artists' and designers' processes, critical thinking and looking skills, and confidence in engaging with modern and contemporary art and design.

Through four engaging modules, participants will delve into themes such as Places & Spaces, Art & Identity, Transforming Everyday Objects, and Art & Society. Welcome to Modern Art & Ideas! This course provides an in-depth exploration of modern and contemporary art through various themes such as Places & Spaces, Art & Identity, Transforming Everyday Objects, and Art & Society. Participants will gain insights into the creative processes of artists and designers while connecting with an international learner community.

Seeing Through Photographs

Seeing Through Photographs delves into the understanding of artists' processes and the choices that inform a photograph's making. Participants will explore the relationship between a photograph's subject and meaning, gaining confidence in analyzing and appreciating photography.

What Is Contemporary Art?

In What Is Contemporary Art?, participants will consider this question through an exploration of more than 70 works of art made between 1980 and the present. This module provides insights into contemporary art themes such as Media from Television to the Internet, Territories & Transit, Materials & Making, Agency, and Power.

Fashion as Design

Fashion as Design focuses on the history, development, and impact of garments over time, exploring the lifecycle of clothing and the choices made about fashion with respect to expression, identity, labor practices, and sustainability. Participants will gain a multifaceted understanding of fashion design through multiple lenses.
